Step Into Something Greater by Asking One Simple Question

Recently, I came across a video of a father talking with his five-year-old daughter. Her grandmother had just passed away, and like so many children do, she had simple, honest questions about death. Where do we go? What happens next?
The father answered in a way that felt both magical and deeply comforting. He told her that Grandma chose to become pixie dust, that she was now an angel watching over them. That she had important work to do on Earth, but now heaven needed her more.
Then he gently added that someday, not anytime soon, he would go too.
The little girl paused, looked at him, and asked:
“How will I walk on my own?”
There is something about that question that stays with you. Not just because of loss, but because it points to something deeper. How do we choose to move through this world?
And maybe the real question becomes: how will I walk?

A Shift in Perspective
Many astronauts have said that when they look back at Earth from space, something shifts. There are no borders, no divisions, just one shared home.
It makes you realize how much of what we focus on is shaped by boundaries, both physical and mental.
But when you expand your perspective, you begin to see that we are not meant to walk alone. We are connected.
To the people we love.
To the animals we care for.
To the strangers we encounter.
To the Earth that sustains us.
How We Choose to Walk
Walking forward is not about doing it alone. It is about choosing how you show up.
More aware. More compassionate. More intentional.
It is about understanding that your actions matter.
And perhaps the question evolves to:
How will I walk forward with purpose?
Because we can make a difference. And often, it is the smallest choices that create the biggest ripple.
A Life I’m Choosing
For me, this has become deeply personal.
I am finally coming into myself and choosing a life where I take the lessons from those who are here, and those who have passed, and use them for something greater.
That is how Lew Dog Gives came to be.
A conscious decision to live a life of service, kindness, and meaning. To carry forward what I have been given, not just in memory, but in action.
If you are doing the same, I would truly love to hear your story.
And if you feel called to be part of this, helping animals, supporting this mission, or simply choosing to show up with more intention, I invite you to join us. Because how we walk forward shapes more than just our own lives.
If this story moved you and you feel inspired to turn compassion into action, you can support heroes and animals in need by making a donation directly at Lew Dog Gives. If this journey resonates with you, I’d truly love to hear your story at sayhi@lewdoggives.org.
