How Much Food is too Much? Finding the Perfect Portion for Your Pup

Updated: Sep 17

When feeding your dog high-quality, natural food, the big question isn’t just what to serve—it’s how much to dish out! Finding the right portion size ensures your pup gets all the nutrition they need without overdoing it.

If your dog had it their way, portion sizes wouldn’t exist. Every meal would be an all-you-can-eat buffet, and they’d be first in line. But just because your pup acts like they’re starving (even after dinner) doesn’t mean they actually need that extra scoop of food. When it comes to feeding your dog wholesome, all-natural meals, portion size matters—and getting it right helps keep them happy, healthy, and ready for all the zoomies life throws their way.

So, how much should you serve? It depends! Your dog’s age, size, weight, activity level, and overall health all play a role in determining their ideal portion. A tiny Chihuahua won’t need as much as a high-energy Husky, and a senior pup with a slower metabolism will have different needs than a growing puppy. That’s why it’s always best to consult your vet.

When using homemade meals, you can start with 2-3% of your dog's ideal body weight per day in food. Adjust based on their activity level and body condition.

A well-balanced diet for dogs should consist of approximately 40-50% high-quality protein (such as lean meats, fish, or eggs), 25-30% healthy carbohydrates (like vegetables, fruits, or whole grains), and 20-30% healthy fats (from sources like fish oil, coconut oil, or flaxseed), with essential vitamins and minerals to support overall health.

Just like humans, dogs need time to adjust to new foods. When introducing homemade meals, start slow—mix a little into their regular diet and see how they handle it. No one wants a case of the tummy rumbles! If your pup’s tail is wagging and their digestion is happy, gradually increase the portion. Remember, balance is key: a well-fed dog is a happy, healthy dog (and one that won’t beg for seconds… okay, maybe just a little).
